Heidegger’s heritage: The temporal politics of authenticity, then and now

Abstract For a discipline as philosophically and temporally sensitive International Relations, it is curious that Martin Heidegger, widely considered the most important philosopher of twentieth century, has only recently begun to receive disciplinary attention. It also noteworthy IR begins grapple with right-wing extremism, not addressed Heidegger’s fascist politics. Conducting close reading his account existence in time, this article argues from magnum opus final diaries, Heidegger prefigured many existentialist discussions, but particular conceptualisations temporality, authentic Being lent political life dangerous edge. Scrutinising both conceptual practical consequences thought, traces key tensions claims that, realise true Selfhood, we must overcome social time on road death.
